You wouldn't think it to look at it, but I was inspired to this by reading an M.R. James ghost story about a Punch and Judy show. It was originally supposed to be a really creepy image, but it became... this. Ah well. I think Mr Punch, even at his happiest and most colourful, is still inherently unsettling, and trying too hard to make him 'dark' misses the point somewhat (like all those 'dark' re-imaginings of Alice in Wonderland).
Just look into those manic eyes! No wife-beating, serial-killing sociopath has any right to be so damn jolly, frankly.
Hey I remember Harris telling me you were doing something based around Punch and Judy and it sounded really intriguing! I had no idea that the show in it's current form was descended from a serial killer crazy style story.
There is a sinister edge to him, I agree. Those big old happy eyes and red cheeks.
Oh you dick I love you. BEST JESTER EVER. This has SERIOUSLY made my night, the colors are BONKERS and so rightly placed! Some of my favorite color combos are red yellow and blue though.

When Dave last saw me working on it it had a fancy, ornate border and some of the other characters in the corners - Judy, the baby, the policeman and the crocodile (with sausages!) But when it came to add Mister Punch himself, it was all far too crowded, so I just added some simple carnival-type stripes and the rest was consigned to the scrap bin.
Which is a shame, as I really liked the crocodile.

I didn't really have to do anything to make it creepy - that's what I mean about Mr Punch, you can make him as jolly as you like and he's still got that 'scary clown' vibe going on.

When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

I suppose if you did want to make it darker you could add a dull cracked texture to the paint - the puppet mask from the 'Saw' films springs to mind.
but your right, he's still some what unsetelling is his own super-happy-garish way
