Mr Punch, he of the seaside booth.
You wouldn't think it to look at it, but I was inspired to this by reading an M.R. James ghost story about a Punch and Judy show. It was originally supposed to be a really creepy image, but it became... this. Ah well. I think Mr Punch, even at his happiest and most colourful, is still inherently unsettling, and trying too hard to make him 'dark' misses the point somewhat (like all those 'dark' re-imaginings of Alice in Wonderland). Just look into those manic eyes! No wife-beating, serial-killing sociopath has any right to be so damn jolly, frankly. |

I suppose if you did want to make it darker you could add a dull cracked texture to the paint - the puppet mask from the 'Saw' films springs to mind.
but your right, he's still some what unsetelling is his own super-happy-garish way
